Beginners are welcome!

When was the last time you truly challenged yourself or did something adventurous?

Come and join us to learn the techniques of climbing. You’ll never imagine how much a difference it would make to your life!

Sports climbing is a multi-dimensional sport from a fitness point of view. It offers a holistic balance between physical exercise and mental discipline. And it is much more than just upper-body strength. It relies on precisely trained intricate footwork, lower body strength, and lean muscle mass. Although not often thought of as a common form of cardio, ascending walls is a sure way to get your heart pumping. A one-hour climb session can burn well over 700 calories!

Our instructors have been trained according to Singapore Sport Climbing and Mountaineering Federation (SSCMF) standards, and withhold a high regard for the safety of all participants. After this one-day course, you will be awarded with a Sport Climbing Level One Certificate, in accordance with the SNCS endorsed by the SSCMF.

Pre-requisite:

  • At least 13 years of age

Syllabus

  1. Introduction to the Sport of Climbing
    – Top-rope Climbing vs Lead Climbing
    – Placement of protection points
    – Development of climbing in Singapore
    – Concept of climbing
    – Sport climbing /Traditional climbing
    – Lead / Top-rope
    – Bouldering
  2. Introduction of Climbing Equipment (usage, care & limitation)
    – Ropes (Dynamic & Static)
    – Harness
    – Carabiner
    – Friction devices (Fig. 8 & Tubular)
    – Climbing shoes
    – Helmet
    – Chalk (Drying agent)
    – Others – Quickdraws (Runners), Sling/Tape
  3. Tie-in Knot (usage, limitationc& dressing)
    – Figure of Eight thread-through
    Belaying Technique (5 steps belay) using friction devices
    – Belaying a climber
    – Lowering a climber
    – Belaying stance
    – Arresting a climber’s fall
    – Rope handling & management
  4. Basic Climbing Technique
    – Use of handholds – pinch, grip, underhand, side pull, sloper & pocket
    – Use of footholds – edging & smearing
    – Basic wall configuration – corners, overhangs, slabs & roof
  5. Top-Rope Climbing
    – Pre-climb checks
    – Climbing commands
    – Spotting
    – Safety considerations – pendulums, falling on other people, rope placement & buddy check
  6. Course Review
    – Suggestions for further advancement
    – General discussion and feedback

Passing Standards: Trainees must demonstrate the following –

  1. Correct harness usage
  2. Correct tie-in technique using the figure-of-8 knot
  3. Correct belay technique using a friction device
  4. Correct use of climbing calls
  5. Perform pre-climb checks
